Good nutrition, exercise and mental wellness are all important for healthy growth – whether you live with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) or not! While learning to manage a chronic disease like GHD can be an adjustment, it’s important to make good health a top priority.

Eating Well

Taking growth hormone treatment means it’s even more important for your child to eat a well-balanced diet to support growth and healthy weight gain:

  • Make sure your child get enough vitamins, minerals and other healthy foods.
  • Try to get them to eat at least one dark green and one orange vegetable each day.
  • Replace sugary snacks and high-fat salty snacks like potato chips with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Qualified dieticians can offer further expert advice and treatment if you have any worries about your child’s weight. More information about qualified dieticians is available at Dieticians of Canada . If you have any health concerns –before, during, or after your child exercises – seek advice from your healthcare team.

Staying Active

Staying active is also important. Not only does it help control weight, exercise also strengthens and energizes, helps build stronger bones and healthier muscles, and protects against disease.

Encourage your child to participate in activities such as hockey, basketball, soccer and softball. Or sign them up for some after-school programs and get them moving with their friends.
